Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory condition affecting the joints. RA usually starts with pain and swelling of the small joints of the hands and morning stiffness lasting more than half an hour. It is more common in women. Early diagnosis is very important to prevent long-lasting damage to the joints. Along with the clinical presentation, a blood test and an x-ray and/or an ultrasound of the joint can help us make the diagnosis. Over the last 15 years major advances were made in the treatment of RA. Today we have effective medications that can significantly reduce inflammation and pain, improve function, and prevent joint damage.

Joint pain can be due to different conditions. Common conditions such as osteoarthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis can be treated with physical therapy, joint/tendon injections and medications to control pain. More serious conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus cause inflammation of the joints and can cause damage to other organs.
